Also fyi: the domain owner is Brent Haberer, who is listed on the roster as a COML. Surprised this has gone this long without getting fixed: wonder if anyone's had contact with this guy recently?

The work on the website is no big deal.. I monitor things constantly on it, I actually run 3 separate websites on this server, it is a dedicated server just for the websites I have on it, so it requires a decent amount of maintenance.

Biggest change lately was assigning Certificates to the websites, used to run normal HTTP: on them, but now they require SSL to connect to them, added a level of security to things. Small things all the time, Updating the server, updating the version of Joomla that I run here etc.. Plus I still try to keep the Documents updated, the main links on the main page are always as current as I can keep them, Stew keeps me on my toes on that one.

Would be nice to have front page content to add from time to time, that is my biggest failing on the site, I never add much to the main page information wise.. I probably should start adding things more regularly.

I would submit that there are two entirely different skill sets involved: One is as you describe which is to maintain the technical infrastructure, keep the certificates up to date, and so on. The second is to generate content, such as document activities or preview an upcoming event, recruit new members, and so on. I'm pretty good at the former, but I suck at the latter.

The bottom line is that the R1D6 web site seem to meet our needs, but we could rely on it more if folks would step up to generate content.

By contrast the State ARES site is really in a very sorry state and does more harm than good. I would argue that it would be better to delete the pages with misinformation if we can't get somebody to keep them current.

The reason for using Wordpress is that somebody with more journalistic skills can maintain the site. A nerd like me can write HTML and CSS but I'm no good at telling stories.

We just have to find somebody with the time and talent to take on the State site. (not complaining, just saying...)

That domain also shows Nate Walowicz as the contact, not sure if he worked on it or what. I have sent him an e-mail asking him about it also.. Will see if Good ole Nate knows anything about it.

This will probably offend some people, but this has bugged me for a while. I honestly find the header on this website to be unattractive and embarrassing. It looks like the header to a MySpace page from 10 years ago. It does not come off as being very professional. I don't know much about the Joomla CSS, but it seems that this site could also be reskinned to have a lot more sex appeal than it currently has. It looks like it is running with the default styles. The Joomla showcase page demos some customized sites showcase.joomla.org/ I did a quick search and found free templates to improve the look of the site. www.siteground.com/joomla-templates.htm It would go a long way to attracting people if the website looks professional.

If you guys need help with the header design, I can help with that. Besides my day job in video games, I have 20 years of Photoshop experience. Some example of my work is www.kurtfehlhauer.com , www.denverglamour.com and www.supportparity.com . All the sites were either hand coded using Python/Twitter Bootstrap running on Google AppEngine or Wordpress running on a Linode server behind Nginx.

The main page needs some attention. Can it be changed from the blog posts like "Trying out a new File Manager", "New Domain is Registered" or my favorite "Site moved to a new server and fixed bugs after upgrade" to a static page? Seriously, the first time I visited the site I thought I had made a mistake. Again it looks like we are running with default settings which are never meant to be used in a production setting. My suggestion would be to have a static front page with information about the R1D6 ARES. I don't know anything about Joomla, but in WordPress you can select a static page for the home-page.

If Joomla is too hard to administrate, maybe the site should be changed to Wordpress. At the very least the public facing pages need to be improved upon. Right now they probably do more harm than good.

The suggestions are not offensive at all, I have been trying to get people to help me for over 2+ years now with no real comments.. But coming here Taunting your awesome abilities while rudely slamming the website is neither constructive nor helpful on any level. There is absolutely NO reason for you to have posted the way you did.. Especially not knowing anything about the background or history of the site, or the person running it.. Sound like a Troll to me.

If you want to help, that is fine.. I am not a graphics designer, I am a systems administrator. I run this server, I run 3 websites on it, and they all function extremely well and do what they are supposed to. So once again, I don't understand your purpose of slamming on it the way you did. Especially since you prefaced your comments with "I might Offend Someone". That usually indicates the intent of trying to offend someone, Please do not do it again.. If you want to help, offer positive suggestions, or e-mail me directly and I will be happy to discuss things.

I pay for this site out of my own pocket, have never received a dime for anything, and this is not one of those "Free Hosts". It may not be of Professional "Paid" Graphics Quality, but the site does what it needs to. The template on the site is not "STOCK", It is very functional, but being as I am not a graphics oriented person, and I don't have 30 hours a week to sit here and design things for this site.. I have not ever got overly complicated on my layout or configuration, but I guarantee the back end that drives this site is extremely complicated and functional.. It is easy to change graphics, layout and content. But I have never received anything as far as an offer of any real suggestions or offers of help.. Most people that use the site like it, and I based what I do off that.

If you have something constructive to add, I will be happy to listen, make changes, install new graphics etc.. But your post above was not constructive in any form.
