When folks google the JEFFCO ARES website, they are taken to a badly outdated web page with incorrect e-mails, and still listed as D23. I am wondering when that will be corrected so they can be directed to the newer (and much better) site. Having said that, it doesn't look like anyone is using this particular forum since the last post shows over 2 years ago. Thoughts?
Also, the link for this group from the state ARES website takes you to some foreign language unrelated location. I sent a notification to the state coordinator, but have not had a response.
I cannot control the old website that will not disappear, not sure why it is even out there still. I do not maintain it, or have any control over it.
I will see if I can do something to help with the google searches, but once again, that is something I do not control, as long as that old website exists, I cannot change how the searches come up asside from paying a lot of money, and I already invest a couple hundred dollars a year out of my own pocket for this website. Maybe they should start searching for Ares R1 D6 or something like that. But I will update the Meta on the site to see if it helps.
As for site usage, You can lead a horse to water, but cannot force him to Drink. There are a lot of people in ARES that seem resistant actually using this website for communications. That is a discussion that should go to the EC.. I have had the same discussion many times myself in the past, but it has done no good.
If you have any suggestions, I am open to them.. But I maintain this website for R1D6, I have no control over other people in the group.
Sadly the State ARES web site is horribly broken. The "MAIN" page gets updated once in a while which gives the impression that it is being actively maintained. However, the Training, Links and Resources pages are so out of date as to be useless. These pages were originally created by John W0VG and he handed control of the site over to Perry W6AUN to designate a web site maintainer, and it appears that other than the main page, no updates have happened in about 5 years. The misinformation on the State ARES site appears to be a significant source of confusion for search engines, especially since about every state in the union has a Jefferson County.
I do agree that the broken State ARES site is an obstacle for people looking for information about ARES. New hams would not find this site at all informative, and more likely get sent in the wrong direction. Note, however, that I am not complaining since when you complain you usually get assigned the task of fixing it.
I've sent an email to the owner of the domain where the old jeffco website lives requesting his assistance ( whois output below) It appears the domain is registered until 2018 in his name, which suggests it's actively maintained. Most likely this site is a forgotten subir on the server, so it's not even been thought of for years. It looks like Garvey and Hall are still listed as contacts, so I'll ping them as well. I've also grabbed a copy of the whole site as a backup and for hacking if it becomes necessary.
I *think* the responsibility for the State website is with Emit , or was last I asked. He did make a comment this weekend ( and has in the past) that he has meant to fix it, but has yet. I think many offers have already been made to assist and turned down. It was migrated to wordpress awhile back with the express idea that it would be easier to keep it up to date, but, alas...
Willem, I think we can motivate them if we do it in the right way- as in, suggest a solution that requires no effort on their part.

I updated the meta on this site.. Will take a while to propagate to search engines and such, but hopefully it will help with searches.. The comments about how google searches caused me to verify my site configuration and I discovered that I had never even filled in the meta for search engines. So with that being updated now, hopefully it will help with people searching for Jeffco, ARES, Colorado, R1 D6, R1D6 etc..
I will monitor the search engines and see if it appears easier in the future on searches.
I think this is the most activity I have ever had on the website, I personally kind of like it Keep it up.
Thanks Mike! That sounds like great progress. Also, I share your frustration as to use of the website and am surprised by the quick responses. I think it's a valuable recruiting tool and hope if it continues. As Willem suggested, if you complain, you get assigned something. I am not a web designer or manager but am more than happy to help wherever possible and I can learn quickly. Just let me know what I can do.
